چکیده

We study the ow of a uid occupying an innnite horizontal domain bounded by a rugose plate which is at rest and by a plane plate which moves with a constant velocity. The rugose plate is covered with periodically distibuted asperities of size ". We prove that, outside a neighbourhood of the rugose region, the ow behaves asymptotically as a Couette ow, as " ! 0, up to an exponentially small error. Abstract. Microshape Control, Riblets, and Drag Minimization

Relying on the rugosity effect, we analyse the drag minimization problem in relation with the micro-structure of the surface of a given obstacle. We construct a mathematical framework for the optimization problem, prove the existence of an optimal solution by Γ-convergence arguments and analyse the stability of the drag with respect to the micro-structure. For Stokes flows we justify why rugosi...

Cusp formation for evolving bubbles in 2-D Stokes ow: the e ect of variable surface tension

Analytical and numerical methods are applied to investigate the e ect of variable surface tension, induced by the presence of surfactant, on a bubble evolving in 2-D Stokes ow. The evolution is driven by an extensional ow from a four roller mill. Of particular interest is the possible spontaneous occurrence of a cusp singularity on the bubble surface. Using complex variable methods, exact solut...

This paper presents numerical results obtained by applying an LES model based on a rational subdiagonal Pad e approximation in the wave number space We used a spectral element code to test this LES model a coarse DNS and the Smagorinsky model with Van Driest damping in the numerical simulation of a D channel ow at Re The corresponding results were compared with the ne DNS simulation of Moser Ki...

Preconditioning Methods for Low-Speed Flows

We consider the steady-state equations for a compressible uid. For low-speed ow, the system is sti because the ratio of the convective speed to the speed of sound is quite small. To overcome this di culty, we alter the time evolution of the equations but retain the same steady-state analytic equations. To achieve high numerical resolution, we also alter the arti cial viscosity of the numerical ...

Computation of Viscous Flow for a Boeing 777 Aircraft in Landing Configuration

A series of Navier-Stokes simulations of a complete Boeing 777-200 aircraft con gured for landing is obtained using a structured overset grid process and the OVERFLOW CFD code. At approach conditions, the computed forces for the 777 computation are within 1.5% of experimental data for lift, and within 4% for drag. The computed lift is lower than the experiment at maximum-lift conditions, but sh...
